CLUBS ON SHOW
The clubs form an important part of the Land Rover fraternity, preserving vehicles, registering historical vehicles in order to protect the marque’s history and in many cases helping their communities with groups such as 4x4 Response, Search and Rescue, keeping public rights of way open with maintenance, working with local authorities and offering support to their local communities through charitable events
and fundraising. Celebrating the 15th anniversary of the P38A, the Range Rover Register displayed some special examples of this model.
The G4 Club put on a special mini G4 Challenge of their own for visitors to the show to take part in testing both mental and physical abilities. And were rewarded with the honour of 'Club of the show'.
Here's what some club members had to say over the course of the weekend...
Emon Khan, Chairman and Mark Roberts, Treasurer and membership officer, G4 O
wners Club
"Just like Land Rover we’re supporting the Red Cross. Here at the show we’re raising money by selling limited-print T-shirts for £4, £2.50 of which goes to the charity. We really want to promote Land Rover’s message that the G4 Challenge is about green driving, which they’re achieving bit by bit. We’ve had a great time at the show so far and have been able to participate in a couple of the main arena displays."
Mike Cummings, member and club shop organiser, Special Vehicles and Defender and 130 Club
I’m in a drop-sided pick-up 130 with a demountable camper on it. At the moment it seems like a very good show. The ground is coping very well and it seems like a good site. So far we’ve enjoyed visiting the traders.
Dean Hendricks, Committee member and newsletter editor, Suffolk LRC
"It’s
certainly a lot drier here. It’s a nice setup and you can appreciate
that it’s been well organised. We’ve helped out at Billing for a long
time now and this seems like a much better solution. We’ve been
marshalling the campers all weekend so we haven’t had a chance to go
for a wander. "
Nigel Wilson, Club member, Series III, 90 and 110 Club
"There’s a nice lot of people coming round and there seems to be a lot more camping. Everyone seems to be enjoying the show. We’ve been asked to take two vehicles in the arena for the ’25-years ago feature’. We’re helping to highlight the way the 90 and 110 paved the way for the Defender."
Paul France, Events coordinator, Discovery Owners Club
"We’ve found it to be very good so far. The weather
hasn’t been great but it’s picking up so today should be alright. It’s been brilliant up to now; good turnout of our members. We’ve had to split our club to accommodate both shows but we’ve got more here than at Billing. I’m not sure about the trade but I think that the clubs have mostly come to Newark. We had a bit of trouble with our marquee yesterday; it blew off and landed square on a Series III a bit like a big white garage. I’ve had a quick look round so far and it looks good; the ground is the real positive. You wouldn’t really tell that it had rained last night."
Andrew Cross, Vice Chairman, The Series One Club
"We’re
enjoying it so far. It’s a good site and it’s nice and spacious. I’ve
been manning the stand so my time to wander is coming shortly. I’ve
been going to Billing for many years and I understand the reasons for
changing, that’s why I came here. It’s a big site with a nice lot of
space. Considering all the rain we’ve had, the ground has held up
remarkably well. "
Rob Woodworth, Committee member, 4x4 Response Yorkshire and Lincolnshire
"We
want to promote a show that’s local in our area. We’re really trying to
push a local show forward as most of us here today are from
Huddersfield, Doncaster and scattered around Sheffield. It’s been very
busy here as we’ve been sorting the raffle out all morning. I’ll have a
wander later; I really need a spare wheel for my Land Rover."
Paul Humphreys, Chairman, CRAG (Countryside Recreational Access Group)
"We’re having a fine time. The ground is soaking up the water a treat. It really doesn’t matter how much you plan though, the weather will do what it wants to do. Luckily the showground has coped well. Everything’s going well apart from a wheelbearing has gone on my Land Cruiser. It wants to be a Land Rover you see."
Lee Neale, Club member, Camel Trophy Owners Club
"The show is definitely worth coming for. I come from Billing and I’ve even worked there. It makes more sense for me to come to another show and try something new. With the rain we’ve had, the ground here at Newark has drained really well. It’s a good show with tarmac and walkways, which makes a huge difference. I’ve seen some of the main arena action and it all looks very good so far."
